Packaging School & AICC: Balancing Logic and Emotion

Dr. Andrew Hurley reflects on the logical nature of the corrugated packaging industry and its reliance on mathematics and processes. Dr. Hurley also explains how corrugated packaging needs to have emotional impacts as well—branding, ergonomics, etc.

Dr. Andrew Hurley, our Founder and a Professor of Packaging Science at Clemson University, recently wrote in an edition of BoxScore by AICC.

Dr. Hurley states:

Much of the work is mathematical—at the corrugator, in the design department, in diemaking—it's math, measurements, and precision. Even the converting process is timed.

Now, a significant number of consumers see traditional retail goods for the first time, at their doorstep, in a brown box! Instead of standing out on the shelf, packages need to perform at home. Customers are holding corrugated packaging in the same high expectations as they do a paperboard carton in retail.
