IADD Diecutting Academy: Diecutting 101

Examine the fundamental principles of diecutting for packaging and printing applications.

What you will learn

This course will expose you to an overview of the fabrication process, the major types of diecutting (platen: hard anvil diecutting, platen: soft anvil diecutting, cylinder-rotary hard anvil diecutting, cylinder-rotary soft anvil diecutting, rotary pressure cutting, rotary crush cutting), and more. Within these lessons we cover the setup, processes and tools, and types of cutting required for each diecutting technology. We also explore converting processes, like covering cutting, creasing, scoring, perforating-serrated cutting, embossing, and debossing. The course concludes with an interactive lesson on the “sins” of diecutting, covering the main variables leading to converting failures.

Course Objectives

Describe the overall fabrication process and the purpose of diecutting in packaging and converting
Differentiate between major types of diecutting technologies, including platen (hard and soft anvil), cylinder-rotary (hard and soft anvil), rotary pressure cutting, and rotary crush cutting
Explain the setup, tools, and operational steps involved in each type of diecutting process
Analyze the function and outcomes of converting processes such as creasing, scoring, perforating, embossing, and debossing
Evaluate packaging samples to identify common diecutting errors or “sins” and recommend corrective strategies to avoid converting failures
