Why Flexible Packaging?

Let’s talk about why flexible packaging is trending and introduce you to new flexible packaging technologies. Flexible packaging uses less material, is lightweight, and takes up less space than other traditional formats. Research shows that when given the choice between the same product in different packaging, consumers prefer flexible packaging 71% of the time. In fact, when human behavior research firm, Package InSight, tested the Daisy Sour Cream Pouch vs. the Tub via eye-tracking technology, it was proven that consumers viewed the pouch 53% longer than the tub.

Flexible packaging creates less waste by:

  • Reducing Material Use – 2 lbs. of plastic delivers the same amount of liquid as 3 lbs. of aluminum, 8 lbs. of steel, or 27 lbs. of glass.

  • Saving Energy – One truck of empty flexible packaging replaces 25 trucks carrying cans for the same amount of food.

  • Reducing Emissions – Organic waste in landfills emits methane, a GHG with 23 times more global warming potential than CO2, but plastic packaging helps keep food out of the landfill.

  • Saving Resources – Food can be kept from spoiling and can also be protected from damage during distribution.

  • Reusing Resources – Flexible packaging can be recycled to polymers or for energy at the end of its initial life.

Flexible films can be used for diverse applications because structures can be customized by:

  • The number of layers

  • The materials used for each layer

  • The order of layers

With all of the opportunities for creativity, flexible packaging innovations are all around us. Take for example Cryovac Sealappeal for Fruit & Salad. This ultra-transparent and easy-peel film from Sealed Air showcases products in the best possible way. It allows for maximized transparency and visibility.

Another innovative example is ProAmpac’s EZY PRO 10. EZY Pro10 pouch is a stand-up pouch with a spout that is pre-filled with protein powder. The user fills the pouch with 230ml of water and shakes it before consuming it. This creates convenience, easy storage, and transportation for consumers.

Flexible Packaging is all around a very versatile packaging material, making it ideal for many products. There are plenty of advantages, making it one of the fastest-growing segments of the packaging industry.
